These rigid "fake books" are from the Museum of Natural History and were used to store specimens of insects etc. We cannot date them precisely, but they probably originated in the early 20th century.
Each one is 33 cm tall, 25 cm deep and 9 cm wide. The internal measurements of each side of the cover are: 21.5 cm x 30 cm, making it possible to store most magazines, A4 documents etc.
